Interdisciplinary Adult Dysphagia Workshop

December 2, 2023

$130.00 – $425.00

Interdisciplinary Adult Dysphagia Workshop:

Level 1 Self Study – November 6-17, 2023

Level 1 Live Online Session – November 18, 2023 from 9:00 am to 1:00 pm

Level 2 Self Study – November 20 – December 1, 2023

Level 2 Live Online Session – December 2, 2023 from 9:00 am to 1:00 pm

Interdisciplinary management of dysphagia ensures a carefully planned and thoroughly conducted assessment and treatment of the patient’s swallowing disorder as well as a comprehensive understanding of the underlying etiology leading to the dysphagia. Working together, the Occupational Therapist and Speech-Language Pathologist take a leading role in diagnosing and treating swallowing impairments. The result is a holistic and functional treatment plan, with better outcomes and improved quality of life for the patient.

This course will provide the knowledge and clinical decision-making skills required to thoroughly assess feeding and swallowing concerns and make appropriate treatment recommendations based on the client’s medical status and goals of care.

The course includes two (2) levels.

Level 1: Introduction to Dysphagia, includes four (4) paced self-study modules that you have 2 weeks to complete. All Level 1 course content is accessible twenty-four (24) hours a day, at any location with internet access for the duration of the course. Upon completion of the two (2)-week self-study component there will be a live four (4) hour online lecture hosted by your instructors.  The four (4) hour session will include lecture, case studies and learning activities specific to Module 5 and will allow time for questions and group discussion regarding all Level 1 material.

Level 1: Introduction to Dysphagia *This is a pre-requisite for Level 2

Level 1 Self Study – November 6-17, 2023

Level 1 Live Online Session – November 18, 2023 from 9:00 am to 1:00 pm

Level 2: Intermediate Dysphagia Assessment & Treatment, includes five (5) paced self-study modules that you have 2 weeks to complete. All Level 2 course content is accessible twenty-four (24) hours a day, at any location with internet access for the duration of the course. Upon completion of the two (2)-week self-study component there will be a live four (4) hour online lecture hosted by your instructors. This online lecture will consist of case studies (Module 6) to facilitate understanding of Video Fluoroscopic Swallowing Study (VFSS) interpretation, correlation of VFSS results with bedside/clinical observations and how to make treatment recommendations based on the “whole” person.

Level 2: Intermediate Dysphagia Assessment & Treatment

Level 2 Self Study – November 20 – December 1, 2023

Level 2 Live Online Session – December 2, 2023 from 9:00 am to 1:00 pm

Level 1: Introduction to Dysphagia

Provides a comprehensive overview of introductory dysphagia assessment and treatment skills

Module 1: Interdisciplinary dysphagia teams:
This module will provide you with the skills to collaborate as an effective member of the interdisciplinary feeding and swallowing team by learning about what professions make up the feeding and swallowing team, their unique skill sets and skill overlap. A brief overview of the legislation specific to occupational therapy and speech language pathology dysphagia practice will also be presented.

Module 2: Anatomy & Physiology:
This module focuses on normal and abnormal anatomy and physiology related to swallow function within the adult population.

Module 3: Common Dysphagia Patient Populations:
This module discusses common diagnosis’ that place clients at increased risk of developing dysphagia and describes some of the signs and symptoms of dysphagia you may observe.

Module 4: History Taking:
This module focuses on how to take a medical history, review laboratory panels, chest status, oxygen requirements and diagnostic imaging, if available, to inform both bedside and instrumental feeding and swallowing studies.

Module 5: Bedside Assessment (Delivered Live Online):
This module (which will be delivered in live time by your instructors) focuses on the bedside feeding and swallowing assessment including oral motor examination, bolus trials and clinical decision making. Case studies will be utilized to demonstrate how history taking, interpretation of patient chest status, laboratory panels, diagnostic imaging and results of the bedside assessment are used to form an overall clinical impression of your clients feeding and swallowing function in the absence of instrumental assessment availability. What to do in the absence of general diagnostic tests will be considered. Goals of care, quality of life and optimal wellness at end of life in the context of “free” water protocols and “eating/drinking at risk” will also be discussed.

Level 2: Intermediate Dysphagia Assessment and Treatment

Provides an overview of instrumental assessments (concentrating on VFSS), treatment strategies and clinical considerations in the management of clients with dysphagia.

Module 1: Instrumental Swallowing Assessments:
This module focuses on video fluoroscopic swallowing study (VFSS) procedures and interpretation. Case studies will be presented to help consolidate learning. Fiber optic endoscopic evaluation of swallowing (FEES) will be briefly reviewed.

Module 2: Seating & Positioning in dysphagia:
This module discusses various seating and positioning supports that can be put in place for clients with dysphagia including discussion of seating systems, head supports and general body positioning.

Module 3: Swallowing Maneuvers & Swallowing Therapy:
This module will focus on common swallow compensatory maneuvers that can be used with clients to improve swallow safety and identify exercises that can improve swallowing in clients with various deficits. The research surrounding these recommendations and treatments will be discussed.

Module 4: Advanced airways:
This module will describe clinical considerations related to advanced airways, including intubation, tracheostomies and decannulation, as they relate to dysphagia.

Module 5: Alternatives to Oral Feeding:
This module will provide a brief overview of alternatives to oral feeding including general risks and benefits.

Module 6: VFSS Case Studies:
This module (which will be delivered in live time by your instructors) will review several feeding & swallowing case studies, in detail, to facilitate consolidation of course material. Free discussion and debate are encouraged!

Who should attend?
