Providing Mental Health Services in the Context of Poverty and Homelessness: Strategies for Supporting Occupational Therapy

DAY 1
  • Statistics on poverty in the lives of persons living with mental illness(including substance use disorders) in Canada.
  • An understanding of how poverty influences the mental well-being, and ability of persons living with mental illness to function and participate in meaningful activities in their daily lives
  • Strategies that can be used at the individual, community and population levels for mitigating the effects of poverty for persons living with mental illness
  • Strategies for supporting function and participation in meaningful activity among persons living with mental illness in the context of poverty
  • An opportunity to identify directions for occupational therapy research and practice related to addressing poverty among persons living with mental illness.
DAY 2
  • An overview of international statistics on homelessness
  • An introduction to the Bridging the Transition Framework including a summary of how to navigate the Bridging the Transition Framework document
  • A description of how the Bridging the Transition Framework was developed
  • An overview of all components of the framework with each component applied to video cases
  • Guidance on how to support individuals to perform and engage in meaningful activities, and use meaningful activities to support well-being across the trajectory of unhoused to housing.

A light lunch and snacks during breaks will be provided. Please let us know if you have any dietary restrictions/allergies that we can try our best to accommodate.

Presenters:

Dr. Carrie Anne Marshall is an Occupational Therapist, an Assistant Professor in the School of Occupational Therapy, and Director of the Social Justice in Mental Health Research Lab at Western University in London, Ontario, Canada. Her research focuses on intersections between poverty and mental health, with a particular focus on homelessness. Dr. Marshall is the lead author of the Bridging the Transition Framework, a framework aimed at guiding practice for occupational therapists and other professionals who support individuals from unhoused to housing.

Dr. Rebecca Gewurtz is an Occupational Therapist,an Associate Professor in the School of Rehabilitation Science at McMaster University, and an Adjunct Scientist at the Institute for Work and Health. She is the Director of the Inclusive Design for Employment Access (IDEA) Social Innovation Laboratory where she is leading research examining strategies for building employer capacity to hire,accommodate, and promote persons with disabilities. She is also interested in income security, benefit systems, and housing and homelessness. She holds a PhD from the University of Toronto and completed a collaborative program through the CHSRF/CIHR in Health Services and Policy Research.
