Dynamic Core for Kids: Stability in Action

October 18 @ 8:30 am - 4:30 pm

$336.00 – $850.00

October 18 and 19, 2024
8:30 am to 4:30 pm
Edmonton, Alberta

November 9, 2024
8:30 am to 4:30 pm

Challenges with core stability have been documented in many neurodiverse pediatric populations: Autism Spectrum Disorder (ASD), Cerebral Palsy (CP), Developmental Coordination Disorder (DCD), ADHD as well as varying levels of hypotonia.  Join us for an exciting 2-day course that integrates current theory and practice in paediatric treatment with a systems approach that is anchored in a neuromuscular model of core recruitment.

Day 1: Clinicians will be introduced to an integrative model that uses diaphragm and breathing mechanics as an access point for core stability for children. This provides an attainable and accessible starting point to impact multiple systems that are intertwined with core stability: alignment, postural control, balance, sensory processing and emotional self-regulation as well as functional gross and
fine motor skills. A specific assessment model of the alignment, which is crucial to the function of the core, is explained. Participants will also learn the practical skills addressing identification of the proper activation of each of the deep core components (Diaphragm, Pelvic Floor, TA).

Day 2: Participants will learn to implement “Core Strategy” techniques in treatment and functional activities that can have application to a variety of clinical situations (direct treatment, school and home programs) in their clients, ages 2 years and older. Case presentations and small group learning will address how to develop Core Strategy in clients of differing ages and need for support.
Participants will also discuss how to integrate Core Strategy techniques with Neuro-Developmental Treatment handling skills and sensory processing intervention to support a greater range of clients.

Learning Objectives

Upon completion of this workshop the participant should be able to:

1. Identify the muscles included in the inner core and outer core muscle teams.
2. Describe the development of core strategy in neurotypical children.
3. Describe how the development of core strategy directly contributes to the development of self-regulation.
4. Describe how the development of core strategy directly contributes to respiration, balance, gross and fine motor skills.
5. Identify core strategy deficits and compensations in neurodiverse children.
6. Assess alignment in a variety of clients and relate this alignment to core strategy.
7. Individually assess the components of the inner core muscle team.
8. Demonstrate practical techniques for core strategy at a variety of levels of difficulty that can be implemented for a variety of clients.
9. Develop a treatment plan for a variety of neurodiverse children exhibiting challenges with core strategy.

Who should attend?

Shelley helps connect children to their own bodies and raise their awareness of movement. She has been supporting children and families on their journey towards independence for over 35 years.
Shelley’s enthusiasm for clinical research and education began at as a clinical faculty member at McMaster University. Making sense of complex ideas and delivering contemporary information about postural control, Shelley has shared her knowledge and experience with clinicians around the world.
She is passionate about finding and developing approaches to enhance therapy and is certified in both Neurodevelopmental Treatment and Sensory Integration as well as being a yoga and meditation facilitator. Shelley is also the co-creator of Dynamic Core for Kids. This evidence-based approach to central stability for children with motor and sensory challenges is utilized by therapists world-wide. www.heartspacept.com

Julie Wiebe, PT, DPT (she/her) has over twenty-five years of clinical experience in Sports Medicine and Pelvic Health, specializing in abdominopelvic, pregnancy and postpartum health for fit and athletic populations. Her passion is to return active patients to fitness and sport after injury and pregnancy and equip professionals to do the same. She has pioneered an integrative approach to promote pelvic health in and through movement and fitness. These strategies have been successfully incorporated by medical providers, rehab practitioners and fitness professionals into a variety of populations (ortho/sports medicine, pelvic health, neurology, and pediatrics). A published author, Dr. Wiebe is a sought after speaker to provide continuing education and lectures internationally at clinics, academic institutions, conferences and professional organizations. She provides direct care to fit and athletic populations through telehealth and her clinical practice.
