Manual wheelchair users depend on the integrity of the upper limb for independent functioning and active participation in daily living. However, the repetitive strain from transfers plus propulsion puts the arms at high risk for muscle imbalance, micro-tears and over-use injuries at the shoulder, elbow and wrist. In a study by Sie et al., 59% of people with quadriplegia and 41% of people with paraplegia reported pain that affected their quality of life.
