Upper Extremity Preservation for Wheelchair Users

January 28, 2017 - January 29, 2017

This is a Non-Sponsored Event

Wendy Koesters, PT, ATP, SMS

Manual wheelchair users depend on the integrity of the upper limb for independent functioning and active participation in daily living. However, the repetitive strain from transfers plus propulsion puts the arms at high risk for muscle imbalance, micro-tears and over-use injuries at the shoulder, elbow and wrist. In a study by Sie et al., 59% of people with quadriplegia and 41% of people with paraplegia reported pain that affected their quality of life.

Learning Objectives
This course will give participants a deeper understanding of:
– upper extremity anatomy and kinematics
– high frequency injuries with SCI
– clinical examination of the upper quadrant and special tests
– interventions grounded in best practices including manual therapy, active exercise prescription, modalities to aid outcomes and taping strategies.
– outcome tools
– wheelchair set-up and positioning
– skill advancement with wheelchair use
