October 30 @ 1:00 pm - 2:00 pm
Free

OT Month – Free Webinar

Presenter: Dr. Saleel Jivraj, BSc (Hons), OD, MBA, FAAO, FEAOO, FCOptom, FBCLA, FIACLE, FIALVS, FCCSO

Description

This webinar will provide occupational therapists with a practical guide to recognizing and managing visual deficits in patients with low vision, concussion, and traumatic brain injury. Topics will include the use of prescription lenses, yoked prisms, and spectral filters to alleviate post-concussion visual symptoms; eye scanning strategies and side-awareness prism systems to support stroke patients with hemianopia; and the role of bioptic telescopes, artificial intelligence, and smart glasses in enhancing independence and quality of life. Case studies and clinical examples will illustrate how interdisciplinary collaboration between optometry and occupational therapy can optimize patient rehabilitation and functional outcomes.

About the Presenter

Dr. Sal Jivraj is a Calgary-based optometrist specializing in low vision rehabilitation and neuro-optometric care for patients with concussion and traumatic brain injury. He practices at the Rockyview General Hospital Ophthalmology Department’s Sight Enhancement Clinic, where he provides advanced low vision and neuro-vision services. In addition, he is the Director of CalgaryEyeClinics.com, overseeing three full-scope optometry practices located in Market Mall, Southcentre Mall, and Sunridge Mall.

Dr. Jivraj holds multiple international fellowships, including the International Academy of Low Vision Specialists (IALVS), and is among only five current Fellows of the Canadian College of Specialties in Optometry in Alberta (as of October 2025). His clinical focus includes managing visual dysfunction following concussion/TBI using prescription optics, yoked prisms, and custom spectral filters to alleviate symptoms such as light sensitivity, headaches, and visual strain.

He also provides rehabilitation strategies for stroke survivors with hemianopia, incorporating eye scanning therapy and side-awareness prism systems to maximize functional vision. As part of his low vision advocacy, Dr. Jivraj promotes the use of bioptic telescopic glasses—currently permitted for driving in Ontario and Quebec—and has written extensively about the integration of artificial intelligence and smart glasses to improve reading ability and quality of life for individuals with vision loss.

Dr. Jivraj is committed to interdisciplinary collaboration, working alongside occupational therapists, rehabilitation specialists, and ophthalmologists to deliver comprehensive vision care that enhances independence and restores quality of life for patients facing complex visual challenges.
